Westmount Elementary Fire Remediation Update
Dear Westmount Parents and Guardians,
Please read below for an update on the timeline for students returning to Westmount Elementary School.
Recent testing has revealed that the fire caused asbestos contained materials to be disturbed. As a result, the timeline for cleanup and remediation will be extended beyond Winter Break. This is due to the following reasons:
- Additional time required to abate all asbestos contained materials that were disturbed
- Additional complex air testing throughout the building
- With the increased scope of the abatement and remediation task, the District must follow their tender/procurement process
- Testing of materials not directly impacted by the fire location
Ensuring Westmount school is safe for students and staff to return to is the priority in this process. District staff have investigated the option of sealing off the impacted area, however this option doesn't meet the safety standard required for students and staff to return.
We remain committed to supporting students throughout this process. Students will remain at their new temporary schools in the same classrooms until we return to Westmount and the school bus transportation plan will continue as long as students are attending classes at Kay Bingham, Parkcrest, and George Hilliard.
I will continue to update you as more details become available.
Sincerely,
Principal Roy Styles
